FAQS

Shipping & Delivery

Where do you ship?

We ship anywhere in the contiguous United States. Unfortunately, we can’t ship to Alaska, Hawaii, or P.O. boxes right now.

How is my order shipped?

Frozen seafood and shelf-stable items (like pet treats) ship separately to make sure everything arrives in perfect condition.

Frozen seafood ships with dry ice and compostable insulation, keeping everything cold and safe in transit.

Orders go out Monday–Tuesday to avoid weekend delays.

At checkout, you’ll see a shipping breakdown for each part of your order — and if your items qualify for free or discounted shipping, that’ll show automatically.

How long does shipping take?

Most frozen orders arrive within 1–2 days via UPS Ground.

Shelf-stable products usually arrive in 2–4 business days.

Do you offer free or discounted shipping?

Yes — we offer both free and discounted shipping, depending on your order total and where you live. We keep it simple, fair, and transparent while making sure your order arrives frozen, fresh, and in perfect shape.

What should I do with the dry ice from my shipment?

We use dry ice to keep your fish frozen during transit. When removing your fish please be mindful of the dry ice. For your safety, do not handle dry ice with your bare hands.

You can leave the dry ice in the shipping container in a well ventilated area, with the lid off, and it will evaporate in 1-2 days.

We want you to enjoy a seamless delivery and unpacking experience. With this in mind, we cannot stress enough the importance of handling dry ice with caution.

Cuts, Portions, and Box Sizes

How big are your portions?

Most fillets are individually vacuum-sealed 6–8 oz portions — perfect for one hearty meal or two lighter servings. Each individual product will have details on the respective product pages.

Are all portions exactly the same size?

Not exactly — and that’s intentional. Our fish are wild-caught and vary in size and shape, and many of our portions are hand-cut, not machine-trimmed. You may see slight variation between pieces, but you’ll always receive the full weight you paid for, carefully portioned, packed, and labeled.

How about the total weight in a box?

Box weights reflect  net weight, not piece count. A 5 lb or 10 lb box equals the total weight fish inside, but the number of portions may vary slightly since each hand-cut piece can weigh a bit more or less than 8 oz.

In other words — you might get fewer pieces if they’re on the larger side, or more if they’re smaller, but your box will always meet or exceed the total weight listed.

Storage and Handling

How should I store frozen fish?

Keep frozen until ready to use.

How should I thaw my salmon?

Thawing your salmon correctly is very important in order to ensure peak quality and prevent health risks. Once thawed pat gently with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. We recommend you follow FDA guidelines for food handling and cook all products to the FDA’s Recommended internal temperatures. There are several methods of defrosting your seafood. We recommend the following:

  • Refrigerator - For the best quality remove from packaging, plate and then cover. Place it in the refrigerator 12-24 hours prior to cooking. Once defrosted your salmon will be good for up to three days. Do not refreeze it.
  • Cold Water - Submerge the salmon in a cold bowl of water leaving it in the sealed bag. Keep submerged until it is defrosted, changing the water as needed. It is not recommended to thaw the salmon outside of the sealed bag. Cook immediately after defrosting.
  • Microwave  - You can defrost salmon in the microwave by following your microwaves defrost settings and instructions. While this is the fastest method we don’t recommend it as quality will suffer.

Our Fishery & Sourcing

Who catches your fish?

We’re a small-scale, family-run fishery based on the northwest side of Kodiak Island.

We catch a good amount of our salmon and curate the rest from other small-boat fishermen and trusted processors across Alaska.

What does “fisherman-owned and curated” mean?

It means we fish, we source, and we stand behind every piece we sell. Everything we offer comes directly from Alaska’s small-boat fleet — never farmed, always 100% wild.

This is the same fish we bring home to feed our own family, and it’s sourced from fishermen and processors who share our respect for Alaska’s wild resources. Some we know personally, others we’ve come to trust through years of working within Alaska’s close-knit fishing community — people who fish on a small scale, handle their catch with care, and take pride in their craft.

When you buy from Hook Point, you’re supporting a community of independent fishermen and families who make their living responsibly from the same waters we do.

Is all your seafood wild?

Yes — 100% wild-caught, Alaskan, and sustainably harvested. Always.
